sitting silently, doing nothing, spring comes and the grass grows by itself ...

                Picture

The twenty-first century means, for most of us, constant stimulation, constant noise and information overload. Silence can be a rare commodity, and one that we’re not always comfortable with. So why choose to spend all, or part, of a retreat in silence?

In a nutshell, being in silence is a doorway into a more direct experiencing. To experience the rain, the sunshine, the wind, the trees, the house, the stars, the music you’re listening to, the thoughts you're thinking and the feelings you're feeling, without describing ... to simply be with it. When I don’t have to explain myself or something around me; when I don’t have to name things out loud or express my opinion, my mind can relax and deeply rooted tensions can begin slowly to drop away. And when I don’t clutter my mind with opinions and judgments I leave the way clear for genuine insight to happen. The simplicity and silence of the natural environment in Ariège is especially conducive to being still and a few quiet days spent here can open up an immense feeling of inner space.

Even a day or two in silence - neither speaking, nor being spoken to - can bring a deep awareness of the play of our minds and the world of our senses. For those who choose, we will support and accompany you in keeping silence for all, or part, of your still.point retreat.

“At the still point of the turning world…
                there the dance is…
Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is
                only the dance.”

                (T.S. Eliot)
