retreats and retreat holidays for individuals and couples in the south of france

Most of us spend our lives doing, and thinking: being rational, efficient and terribly reasonable, and having polite, ritualistic (but ultimately meaningless) conversations. It’s all very predictable, and all very left brain. It feels comfortable to us because of its sheer familiarity, and because everybody else around us is doing the same thing. And sure, it gets us through the daily grind, and through our relationships, and to some degree though life. But it ain’t all there is, and at some level we know it.

We seem to have lost the ability just to be quiet; to be present in the stillness that lies at the heart of our selves. Yet unless we can touch that still point, we can never fully experience what it is to be alive.

Gurdjieff believed that we live in a state of ‘hypnotic waking sleep’ and function most of the time as unconscious automatons. In this state, he said, we’re not capable of perceiving reality: unless, that is, we wake up.

At Pyrenees Retreats we believe that
the simplest way to wake up is to focus on being utterly present in this moment, now, whatever we’re doing (or not
                doing), being or experiencing; aware
at every level of what’s going on inside
us and around us, neither clinging to nor rejecting what we notice.

                That’s all.

                (But it’s huge!).

                why come on retreat?

Your reasons for wanting to take time out will be as unique as you are. They may, or may not, include wanting
                • to find space, silence, time to breathe, time to feel
                • to rest deeply, and allow long held stress and tension to drop away
                • to come to terms with major change, or find a way out of a difficult period
                • to contemplate a way forward or a big decision
                • to gain some clarity and perspective
                • to ask yourself, or another, difficult questions
                • to find meaning in life beyond day to day or material concerns
                • to find space to create, write, paint
                • to explore a troubled relationship
                • to heal or recuperate from illness, shock or trauma
                • to ask yourself who you really are
                • to connect with and awaken your inner resources
                • to wake up
                • to become more conscious
                • or just to practice being a human being, not a human doing.

                being here now

In fact those moments are there for the experiencing every second of our lives, whether we're sitting meditating or cleaning the loo. It's just that we forget. Coming on retreat can help us remember.

Pyrenees Retreats, in the foothills of the French Pyrenees in Ariège, offers 3 or 4 day (or longer) still.point retreats for individuals and couples, plus intensive relationship retreats for couples wanting to explore, deepen or heal their relationship. We're open from April to November.

"There are two ways of washing the dishes.
The first is to wash the dishes in order to have clean dishes and the second is to wash the dishes in order to wash the dishes"

                Thich Nhat Hanh

“At the still point of the turning world…
                there the dance is…
Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is
                only the dance.”
